Milan lies in the northern part of Italy in the region of Lombardy, of which it is the capital. Milan is also the capital of the province of Milan. The population of the metropolitan area of Milan now exceeds 7 million, which makes the city the most populated in Italy and one of the most populated places in Europe. Among the most well-known attractions of the city are: Milan Cathedral (Duomo di Milano), often compared to il Duomo of Florence, the world-famous opera house La Scalla, the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, the Velasca Tower (Torre Velasca) and many others.
Milan is often called the world fashion capital, and rightfully so: the headquarters of many designer brands, including Versace, Valentino, Prada (Mario Prada was even born here), Gucci, Armani, Dolce & Gabbana are located here, along with many international fashion brands (for example, the hip Abercrombie & Fitch). The Milan Fashion Week is held biannually, and this is the time when fashionistas from all over the world flock to Milan to see or to present the latest in fashion. Milan has two high-profile football clubs, FC Milan and FC Inter (short for “Internazionale”), whose fans' mutual dislike is quite famous. Of course the fact that the two teams have to share one stadium (the beautiful San-Siro) may very well have something to do with it!
