Madrid is a densely populated and strictly functional capital of Spain. The decree of Felipe II to declare it the capital in 1561 was very logical, despite the city's location away from the sea on a high plateau with stern continental climate. That location happens to be the very center of Spain, and where else should the financial, political and cultural hub of the country be if not in the center? Today Madrid numbers around 4 million people and climbing, and its streets and museums are visited by hundreds of thousands of tourists annually. Madrid may not be the brightest star in the sky in terms of architectural variety and perfection, like Barcelona, but its collections of art are definitely the best in Europe, let alone in the country: no art tour of Europe will be complete without visiting the Prado museum in Madrid. The capital of Spain is the party animals' paradise: good bars, wild clubs and summer patios and terrazzas are in abundance here, and most places are open all night long.
