Karlovy Vary

132 km away from the capital lies the famous spa resort Karlovy Vary (the German version is Karlsbad), well-known for its mineral water springs. Prague visitors will find it well worth a day trip or even a weekend stay, for nowhere else you will be able to taste this slightly salty, hot and all-around healthy spring water. It should take no more than two hours to drive or take a bus to Karlovy Vary from Prague, and seeing that the spa is the second most popular place to visit in the Czech Republic, bus trips from the capital are numerous and cost around 10 dollars (one-way). Czech experts advise strongly against travelling by train, as the shortest route takes almost twice as much time and is twice as expensive.

The town retained its 19th century flair, especially in the Historic district. Even a simple walk around can prove a worthy endeavour, if you enjoy elegant old buildings, frilly facades and the overall picturesque feel of the spa town frequented by kings and emperors of the past. You will also invariably run into people tasting signature sulphuric water from strange-looking mugs with curvy handles and long spouts. On a side note, they make excellent souvenirs.

There is no shortage of spa hotels in Karlovy Vary, and since you already made it here, you might just as well plan an overnight stay at the resort to get pampered and relax in one of many thermal baths in town. If you are thinking about getting a full-fledged sanatorium treatment, consider staying longer and having a more health-oriented experience.
