Bars in Raval

L'Ovella Negra

Carrer de les Sitges 5, Raval
L'Ovella Negra is one of the most well-known student bars in the city, that is always crowded, has long line ups, sticky floors (beer spills) and probably the most chilled and fun vibe of all the other places in Barcelona. L'Ovella Negra is not your typical small bar, tucked away in a dark Raval corner, decorated with soft-light lamps and cherry-topped by hot bartenders; no, this place is huge, windowless and reminds more of a monastery (what with all wooden benches and brick walls) with monks completely missing. It's great for beer drinking as Americans, Canadians and the British know it – served in mugs or pints rather than cañas, and decently priced at that (5€ for a huge one). Sangria here is also famous for sizes it comes in, and simple tapas food is served throughout the day. Finding a place to sit, let alone a separate table may be problematic on Fridays and Saturdays, but the mostly international crowd is very friendly and will allow you to squeeze in somewhere on the side. Great for meeting new friends and practicing vocal skills – shouting is essential in L'Ovella Negra's never-ending noise.

Fuzz Box

Carrer de la Riera Alta 8, Raval
Fuzz Box is another rare find in Raval, just as small as the majority of other places, but feels delightfully airy, because, apparently, not that many people know how good it is; hence the possibility to get a drink there on a Friday night with barely any rush or difficulty. The bar selection as usual (beer, wine, shots, good claras) is complemented by an inventive twist on the classic mojito cocktail: apart from offering it in the "normal" flavour, Fuzz Box also makes mango mojitos (less sweet) and berry mojitos ("frutas del bosque" in Spanish, sweeter), both of which are extremely tasty. Plenty of seating, relative to the size of the space, is available in front, with red cushions thrown around on every possible surface and giant kegs doubling as tables. If you arrive with a large party, there are several tables surrounded by couches at the back that can be joined together.

Sf

Carrer de les Carretes 48, Raval
Sf is a cozy little place hidden in the small street in Raval, and it is a given that you might take a few wrong turns before you locate it. Once you find it, though, you are in for a real treat: the place is small, thoughtfully decorated and frequented only by locals or foreigners in the know (friends of locals, most likely). Sf has got some of the best beer on tap: the selection, although small, consists of brews you are not very likely to find elsewhere in Barcelona. The best brew to try is definitely a pint of Brew Dog (5€ a pint, 3€ a caña), either Brew Dog Trashy Blond (fruity-tasting pale ale) or Brew Dog 5 am (slightly bitter amber ale). Friendly bartenders speak English, but if you want to practice your Spanish, they will gladly oblige. The owner himself pours drinks at Sf every night, and is probably the best person to chat with – look out for the longest dreadlocks in the room. Sf also mixes great cocktails, offers shots, wine glasses and regular beer for local prices.
