Berlin is constantly changing – some people even say that five-year old Berlin guidebooks are useless since they describe a completely different city. Tragic events of the 20th century left a deep imprint on Berlin: not only was it almost demolished during World War II, but it was also split into two in essence separate Berlins which even two decades after the fall of the Berlin Wall are still continuing to adapt to one another. Visiting Berlin today is witnessing history in the making, as now it is a massive construction and reconstruction site going through a process of being reborn livelier and more energetic than ever.
Berlin is visited by over 3 million tourists annually, in 2008 even beating Rome in popularity as a prime tourist destination. Berlin has plenty to see, a lot of places to tour, many things to marvel at, tons of different food to savour and plenty of apartment accommodation to stay in – all for relatively little money. The major sites and attractions of Berlin include the Brandenburg Gate (a postcard symbol of Berlin), the Reichstag, and the remnants of the Wall, the Fernsehturm (the Berlin tower), Alexanderplatz and Potsdamer Platz. Berlin also has a fine collection of museums like German History Museum, Jewish Museum, Museum of the Wall at Checkpoint Charlie and the art museum Gemäldegalerie. Berlin truly has something to offer to every visitor.
