Vicente Calderón Stadium

The Vicente Calderón stadium, known in Spanish as Estadio Vicente Calderón, is the home stadium of Madrid's second most known football club that plays in La Liga, Atlético Madrid. The stadium is an iconic site not only for the supporters of the club, but for the city of Madrid in general, as it was the first in Spain to obtain the 5 star classification given out by UEFA to the highest-class football stadiums, beating even the Real Madrid stadium at that.

The Vicente Calderón stadium was inaugurated in 1966, accommodating 62 000 seated spectators. It had originally known as Estadio Manzanares, but in 1971 was renamed Estadio Vicente Calderón to honour the then-current president of Atlético Madrid. The stadium is set to be closed in 2016, when the club moves into its new home, La Peineta Stadium, and is to be later demolished to be turned into a park. The decision to close Vicente Calderón remains controversial among many club supporters.
