Museo Reina Sofia, officially known as the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina SofГa (MNCARS), is located on the southern end of the Golden Triangle of Art in the centre of Madrid, and is a national art museum dedicated to the 20th century art. While not exclusively comprised of Spanish artworks, the museum indeed focuses on Spain by showcasing the two most famous and prolific Spanish artists of the 20th century, namely Salvador DalГ and Pablo Picasso (who also has an excellent museum in Barcelona dedicated to him).
The Reina Sofia collection includes other 20th century Spanish artists such as Joan MirГі, Antoni TГ pies, JosГ© GutiГ©rrez Solana, Pablo Serrano, Juan Gris and many more. The international portion of the collection is small in comparison, but features Robert Delaunay, Damien Hirst, Francis Bacon and Georges Braque, to name just a few.
The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina SofГa was officially inaugurated in 1992, but established as such in 1988. Its main building, now a renovated memorable space with three exterior glass towers, had functioned as a general hospital from the 18th century up until 1969. Apart from the permanent collection, the building houses temporary exhibitions and a large library dedicated to art and art history. The museum is open Monday and Wednesday to Saturday from 10:00 to 21:00 and offers reduced hours on Sundays (10:00 to 14:30). The MNCARS is closed on Tuesdays.
