Buying a house in Costa Brava

When buying a house in Spain, the first question that you need to ask yourself is in which region of this vast country you would like to own a second residence. The peculiarities of many Spanish regions are outlined in a separate article. Considering the advantages and disadvantages of each, we usually recommend choosing Catalonia, one of the most dynamic and diverse nationalities of Spain, and its prime vacation destination, Costa Brava.

Costa Brava real estate never goes out of style thanks to the region's good climate, diverse natural settings, its starkly beautiful coast and the unique geographical location it enjoys: the Pyrenees, the south of France, the Mediterranean sea and the ever-so-cheerful Barcelona are all located very close. Consequently, houses and apartments on Costa Brava are among the most requested on the Spanish market. Costa Brava is a large region with a well-developed real estate market, where potential Costa Brava house buyers with practically any budget enjoy a lot of choice.

Costa Brava has very little to offer in terms of international communities. As opposed to the southern regions of Spain, if you buy a house on Costa Brava, the likelihood of your new neighbours being your compatriots is close to zero.

We recommend the potential Costa Brava property buyers to take a look at the land stretch from Palamos to L'Estartit, where the most in demand are houses in Calella de Palafrugell, Tamariu and Begur. If you are not too fixated on buying property close to the sea, the regions of Alt EmpordГ , Baix EmpordГ  and Pla de l'Estany in the province of Girona have many rustic houses on sale, also known in Catalonia as "masia". These stone houses, usually requiring serious renovations due to their age (many were built in the 19th and even 18th century), always come with land lots. It is not uncommon to find a Catalan masia with 20-30 hectares of land, 2-3 out of which are suitable for gardening and farming, and the rest is just pine forest. At the same time, the cost of these properties is very similar to the cost of houses on the coast that are sold with practically no land.

We advise to steer clear from buying property in resorts that are popular due to its low-cost vacation packages, in particular Lloret de Mar and Tossa de Mar.

Choosing a good house on Costa Brava, negotiating the price, getting a quote for necessary renovations, obtaining a mortgage in a Spanish bank - these questions and many more require the buyer to have a knowledgeable person by her side. This is why, if you are interested in buying a house in Costa Brava, we suggest you get in touch with our real estate agents working in this region of Catalonia, either by phone or using our feedback form.
