Tossa de Mar

Tossa de Mar is a small (population of about 5000 in 2011) resort town practically in the center of Costa Brava.

The distance between Tossa de Mar and Barcelona adds up to a hundred kilometers, so you can either drive (follow the highway AP-7 and take exit #9 that leads to Vidreres, Lloret de Mar and Tossa de Mar) or take a train to Blanes, where you can board the bus going to Tossa de Mar.

On the Cabo de Tossa cape lies Vila Vella - the Old town, the only surviving Medieval stronghold in Costa Brava. Toothed walls and seven towers are all preserved in full. Where there is now a lighthouse, used to stand the residence of the abbe of Ripoll monastery of Santa Maria. Strolling around the fortifications along narrow cobbled streets of Vila Vella, you can peek into the town museum housed in the former governor's house, visit a Gothic church, take a look at the ruins of the Roman times and the Medieval hospital building.

At the service of many visitors of Tossa de Mar, who flock here every summer looking for sun and sea, there are four beaches in Tossa de Mar: Es Codobar, Platja Gran, Plaja del Reig, Platja de Mar Menuda. The largest one, a 400-m stretch of Platja Gran, is found just nearby the ancient walls of Vila Vella. The map detailing Tossa de Mar and all 15 beaches of the town and its outskirts can be downloaded here.
