Blanes is a town in the district of Selva of the Catalan province of Girona with a population of 40010 people (in 2010). Blanes is the southernmost point of Costa Brava and is frequently called the gates of this coastal region. The monument attesting to this fact can be seen on Sa Palomera rocks, one of the tourist sights of the town.
Other interesting points to visit include the famous botanic gardens Marimurtra (JardГn botГЎnico Marimurtra) and Pinya de Rosa (JardГn tropical Pinya de Rosa), as well as several architectural monuments: the parochial church of Santa Maria, built in the second part of the 14th century in Gothic style; the castle San Joan (Castillo de Sant Joan), built in mid-13th century; the Gothic fountain (Fuente GГіtica), created at the beginning of the 15th century.
In the last ten days of July residents of Blanes celebrate their town holiday, or fiesta mayor, which goes on for about a week. Starting in the end of the 19th century, fireworks have played a big part in the celebrations, and in 1970, following the wave of popularity of Spain among international tourists, the municipality of Blanes established the annual Costa Brava Fireworks competition (Concurso de Fuegos de Artificio de la Costa Brava). Both visitors and residents took a liking to the event, and the interest has been steadily growing over the years. Today, the competition goes on for 6-7 days (usually ending on the 27th of July) and the number of spectators enjoying the show approaches one million.
The municipality of Blanes is proud of its Costa Brava beaches: Treumal, a small beach in the northern part of the town next to Pinya de Rosa gardens; Sant Francesc, a beach surrounded by pine trees, also known as Cala Bona, very family-friendly; Santa Anna, a small beach close to the Blanes port, also known as the beach Dels Capellans; Blanes, a central beach to the right of Sa Palomera rocks; S'Abanell, which stretches from the mouth of the Tordera river to the left side of Sa Palomera rocks, and is one of the most active tourist zones.
