Santiago Bernabéu Stadium

The splendid Madrid stadium accommodating 85000 spectators, where Real Madrid FC plays its home games, was built in 1947 to replace the older club's stadium, Chamartín, that could fit only 25000 spectators. The construction of the new stadium was inaugurated by the then-president of the club, Santiago Bernabéu, in whose honour the stadium was renamed eight years later, in 1955. In 1947, however, the stadium was officially called Estadio Real Madrid Club de Fútbol, and nicknamed Chamartín by many Madridistas (club supporters).

Back in 1955, the stadium accommodated 125000 spectators: 7149 of them seated, under the roof, 24079 seated, uncovered, and 19000 of them standing, under the roof, and 74772 standing, uncovered. In 1980-1982 the Santiago Bernabéu stadium received a thorough makeover in anticipation of the World Cup that was to take place in Spain in 1982. The renovated stadium's spectator capacity was reduced to 98000 spots, 67000 of them standing and approximately 32000 seated.

Yet another renovation, completed in 1997, transformed the Santiago Bernabéu into a stadium with assigned seating only, accommodating 77500 seated spectators, as well as introducing newly renovated lounges, VIP boxes, change rooms and other much needed service infrastructure. In 2003, the stadium previously open only on game nights, opened its doors once and for all as a commercial attraction welcoming visitors 365 days a year. Following yet another expansion in 2012, Santiago Bernabéu is able to accommodate over 85000 football aficionados today.
